Burr & Forman's Bryance Metheny Featured in Insurance Journal article on Uber

Firm News

In an article published by Insurance Journal on August 19, 2015, Bryance Metheny comments on the recent Uber cases involving contracted employees arguing that they should be treated as full-time employees with benefits. Metheny doesn't believe that these rulings will be limited to one industry. "The future is going to reveal it's not going to be limited to ridesharing," he said "Overtime pay could increasingly be another consideration Uber and others who operate with independent contractors will have to deal with if new rules proposed by the U.S. Department of Labor are enacted". The Department of Labor proposed updates to the Fair Labor Standards Act that would extend overtime pay to an estimated 4.6 million workers who are currently exempt from under current regulations. Metheny continued on to say, "We are going to see lots of wage and hour suits."
