For example, a study from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, released in December 2021, showed a 63-fold increase in the Medicare visits conducted via telehealth during the pandemic, from approximately 840,000 in 2019 to 52.7 million in 2020.

The rapid improvement of information technology has led to the advancement of the use of telemedicine as a legitimate and necessary platform to deliver needed quality health care. The COVID-19 pandemic put the use of telemedicine more in the mainstream of health care delivery models.

Although telemedicine has become an important tool to deliver health care, its questionable use has led the U.S. Department of Justice to take an aggressive review of business models using telemedicine as a key component.
